Peak commuting hours in cities cause traffic jams, accidents and stress. Regardless of efforts such as car-sharing or increased public transit, the routine of daily life dictates that people travel at similar times during the course of a day. With overpopulation looming as a global concern, this project offers a possible scenario for the future. Instead of employing traditional means of traffic mitigation, Interzone inverts the way we think about scheduling.

Can multiple time zones exist within one city? How might this transform our social landscape?

Below are three interzones within one city, shifted 2 hours apart from each other. Interzones are not dictated by your neighborhood. Individuals opt-in to the interzone that best suits them, and simply sets their clocks accordingly. Everything else stays the same.

Traffic data shows common peak hours, resulting from our shared daily patterns. Preliminary experiments show that breaking that single traffic flow into three interzones would allow gridlock to be avoided completely.

Which interzone would you opt-in to?
